Gregatron's Pick of the Week: Sony Open
Aloha from paradise! Break out your ukulele and strum a few relaxing tunes this week. The PGA Tour continues another “work” week from glorious Oahu. The Sony Open is the first full field event of 2019 and many players left on the sidelines last week *cough Jordan cough* look to jump up the FedEx Cup points list. The flatter parkland style Wai’alae course typically produces low scores, playoffs and lots of highlights. Justin Thomas fired a 59 in route to victory two years ago and Patton Kizzire outlasted James Hahn in a 6 hole playoff last season. For those not so sharp with their games, there’s always the beach bar!
Gregatron’s Pick of the Week: Justin Thomas
No surprise that Thomas is a favorite in this tournament given his recent play. His third place finish last week almost chased down the leaders. He’s also made 4 of 5 cuts at the Sony with a win in 2017 and two other top 25s. With the park style layout this week, and an average of 2.7 strokes gained tee to green this season, I think win #2 is right around the corner. Oh and he’s probably upset that Alabama got smoked in the National Championship this week and wants to let out some heat. Look out!
Back to the Range Bro: Fabian Gomez
It’s unusual to pick a slumper who’s won at the venue, but I had to this week. Gomez is coming off a sluggish year where he finished 162nd in the FedEx Cup race. He’s dropped to 579th in the world and on average loses 0.23 strokes to the field per round. He’ll need to draw on the memories from his 2016 victory at the Sony to recharge those batteries. If not, there’s always the surfing!
