Grab your bathing suits, folks. The sun is shining in beautiful San Diego this week, home of the Farmers Insurance Open at famed Torrey Pines. It’s easy to talk about the Tiger domination at this venue. I mean, the guy has won 8 times on this course, including his most dramatic performance at the 2008 U.S. Open. He’s looking pretty sharp! However, we have reason to believe that Tiger won’t finish on top this weekend.
Gregatron’s Pick of the Week: Rory Mcilroy
The golfballin pick this week is Rory Mcilroy. Rory has shown a commitment to play the PGA Tour more regularly in 2019, adding bigger events to his early season schedule. He’s already seeing strong results at new courses, finishing T-4th at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Even though he’s never teed it up at Torrey Pines, he’s averaging 1.2 strokes gained off-the-tee this season which will serve him well for the length of the South Course. Rory is in a Sunday Slump, failing to close the deal the last 5 times he’s been in the final group. We think he’s bound to win the next one.
Back to the Range Bro: Jordan Spieth
Like it or not, Jordan is rebuilding his game and searching for some confidence on the greens. There are sparks, almost making the cut with a second round 66 at the Sony Open, but he’s missed his last two cuts and hasn’t teed it up at Torrey since 2015 (MC). In three events at Torrey, Jordan has two MC’s and a T-19th. Without some more confidence on the greens, I think Jordan will be grinding out the cut line on Friday. His game will turn around this season, and he will win again, but not until the Texas swing.
